Be patient, as your doctor dedicates significant time to achieving optimal results for your unique situation.
The Fitting Process:
- Trial Lenses: The doctor may try various scleral lenses to find the ideal fit. Special technology can sometimes reduce the number of lenses needed.
- Preparation: Paper towels, an apron, or a dental bib will be used to protect your clothing during the fitting process.
- Lens Placement: A cleaned scleral lens filled with saline solution (sometimes with a yellow dye for better assessment) will be gently placed on your eye.
- Evaluation: You’ll be asked to look downwards and assist by holding your lower eyelid while the doctor controls the upper lid. The doctor will then apply the lens and assess its fit.
- Adjustments: The lens might be removed and replaced with a different one to achieve the optimal fit.
- Additional tests using specialized instruments may follow after a brief waiting period (20-30 minutes) to allow the lens to settle.
- Vision Correction: Once the fit is satisfactory, the doctor will determine the necessary power correction for the lens. Minor adjustments might be made before removal.
- Lens Ordering: After a successful diagnostic fitting, your doctor will contact a lab to custom-make your scleral lenses. Fabrication can take 1-4 weeks depending on complexity.
- Dispensation Visit: Upon receiving your lenses, you’ll return for a follow-up visit. The doctor will ensure proper fit, check your vision, and make adjustments if needed.
- Training: Following successful fitting and prescription, you’ll receive thorough training on scleral lens insertion, removal, and care.
Remember: Patience is key during the scleral lens fitting process. The customized approach ensures optimal comfort, vision correction, and eye health.
